The Mahabharata Connection 2

Sundri Bhavani

There is a very old tale related to Vedic times, the tale is that when Maharishi Kanav wanted to cross the sea there and there was no mean to cross the sea at that time so he worshiped Samudri Maa. Samudri Maa got pleased with his request and drew back the waters of the sea to make way for the Maharishi.

The new tale is related to Mahabharata, this is the same place where Draupadi got married to five pandavas in the presence of Lord Krishna. There are various carvings which date back to lots of time but due to lack of preservation everything has depleted. There are symbolic statues of pandavas with Lord Krishna. There is also the chori or the mandapam where the actual marriage took place. At the time of Mahabharata this place was a dense forest. Today the position of this place is not good as the connectivity to it is in bad shape and even visitors are also few.

People here put stones vertically one on the other to denote the multi-storied building for their future as it is believed that by doing so luck favors you for it.

As we all know that second name of Draupadi was Panchali but very people know that this was because she hailed from the Panchal region in Saurashtra, Gujarat, so yes Draupadi was Gujarati. Normally people think that Panchali means wife of five brothers but its not so Draupadi was Panchali from birth being born in the Panchal region.

There is also the place where Arjuna did his famous Matsyvedh nearby its known as Tarnetar from the temple of Tarnetar Mahadev temple there. There is also a fair organized every year in the memory of Draupadi’s swayamvar. Today also Bharvad community comes there to select bride and groom, this fair is only for selection the actual marriage takes place afterwards as it was with Draupadi. This fair is world famous now and CM of Gujarat comes to inaugurate this fair. There fair has attained now new heights so the selection process has got limited but it has opened up to all communities of people.
